Update on restrictions: Hungary allows travel to 40 destinations

According to the decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, from September 3, travelling is allowed to more than 40 countries for Hungarians, but the two weeks of quarantine upon returning remains mandatory along with the restrictions of the destination country.

Napi Turizmus reported that the Ministry communicated the criteria for travelling abroad.

  • Participation in court or authority matters,
  • Business and work travel,
  • International students with duties at foreign universities (exams, courses, etc.),
  • Trading and trafficking between countries,
  • Family events with no other appointment (wedding, funeral, etc.),
  • Taking care of a family member unable to take care of him/herself due to health problems,
  • Sports, cultural, and religious events of the highest significance and importance.

If someone travels with one of the reasons above, that particular destination is no longer in category I (countries where travelling is not recommended) but category II (countries where travelling is allowed with epidemic measures).

The countries are the following:

United States of America
United Kingdom
Andorra
Austria
Belgium
Bulgaria
Cyprus
Czech Republic
Denmark
Estonia
Finland
France
Greece
The Netherlands
Croatia
Ireland
Iceland
Japan

Poland
Latvia
Lichtenstein
Lithuania
Luxembourg
Malta
Monaco
Germany
Norway
Italy
Russian Federation
Portugal
Romania
San Marino
Switzerland
Sweden
Serbia
Slovakia
Slovenia
Vatican City

Countries not featured on the list above are still not recommended destinations. Returning from any country in the world, Hungarian citizens are obligated to spend two weeks in quarantine.

  1. This is all a joke…. “Sports, cultural, and religious events of the highest significance and importance”…? are you f…… kidding me…

  2. I remain overall totally supportive to Prime Minister – Victor Orban and his Government, in there exemplary Management and Control – there handling, of this novel coronavirus pandemic, that we ALL are living in.
Anonymous – his opinion, directly and pointedly expressed, meets with my total agreement.
America – the Humanitarian Catastrophic Disaster – it continues to be, the question I ask, is why are they on this list ?
America has no god given right nor reason to be on this list for any valid and factorial reason, and it is WRONG that they are listed.
Make decisions dismissing America out of the equation.
If we continue, to look over our shoulder, asking questions like – what’s America – doing or not doing, and forgetting, that our prime focus is US, what are we ALL doing, we have learnt nothing, from a country, that is a Shambles, rocketing downwards into an abyss likened position, that is imploding from within, problems, of mass magnitude, that are witnessed, that there recovery, may never see America in history, the country, it once was in the course of its history and it’s respected place that it once held of global importance.
    Stay Well – ALL.

  3. #Gary: I think you misunderstood the article. Anyone living in Hungary is free to go to visit whatever country they like (including the USA) and will have to quarantine upon return regardless (with certain exceptions). All this ‘update’ does is divide countries into ‘not recommended’ & ‘if you must, then ok’. Ultimately this only affects the type of travel insurance that they can obtain, nothing else. So, your diatribe against the US (which I am no fan of) is misplaced. BTW it seems that you still have not learned the difference between ‘there’ and ‘their’!

  4. Citizenship and Residency status in Hungary do have major variables.
Paulus comments and elaboration appreciated, but does this mean all living in Hungary covers under same citizens and residence ?

  5. On a population adjusted basis there are 5 times more positive cases in USA than in Canada and 2-3 times more deaths per million people in USA compared to Canada. Yet, USA is open but Canada is not. Go figure.

  6. I’d like to retract my earlier comment as I didn’t see the inclusion of Canada on the list of allowed countries.
